November 5th is Guy Fawkes Day in Britain. It’s a day when children collect ‘a penny for the guy’, build bonfires and let off fireworks. In 1605 Guy Fawkes became involved in the Gunpowder Plot. The Plot was intended to overthrow the government and assassinate the monarch by blowing up the Houses of Parliament. It failed and it was Fawkes who was caught and tortured. King James I passed a law making festivities with bonfires an annual event and the tradition remains.
